John Foster
A deplorable accident occurred near Orafino Monday when John
Foster, a farmer living about five miles south of there was run
over by a "Jay-Hawk sweep-stacker" killing him instantly.
It seems as though they were moving their haying machinery from
one field to another, and were forced to go through a narrow
cattle lane. The machine was too wide to go through straight,
so they hitched one of the horses to the side of the machine and
were pulling it through sideways. The other horse, which was
traveling beside the horse in use, became frightened, thus
scaring the other, and both began to run, upsetting the machine
and it threw Mr. Foster and before he could get out of the way
of the stacker it had passed directly over his head and he was
killed instantly. Those who were with him state that he did not
even gasp after they reached him.
Mr. Foster was a man about 33 years of age. He leaves a wife
and two children to mourn his untimely death. He grew to
manhood in the community about 12 miles southwest of town
(Farnam). He is a nephew of Mrs. W.E. Adkisson of this city.
Funeral services were held at the Afton church in that community
and interment was made in the Cambridge cemetery.
