Obituary Collection
Beryl (Smith) Banks

Beryl Roseann Smith, daughter of Raymond and Doris Smith, was born December 8, 1931, at Farnam, Nebraska, and passed away at the hospital in Grand Island on Wednesday, February 25, 1953, at the age of 21 years, 2 months, 17 days.

She was united in marriage to John W. Banks, April 7, 1951, at Farnam. To this union one child, Rodney Eugene, was born April 7, 1952. He passed away the following day.

She lived all her life in the Farnam community, with the exception of one year which was spent with her husband in Manhattan, Kansas, during the time he was stationed there at Fort Riley. She returned to her parents' home when her husband sailed for Korea the first of July. When he returned in January, she joined him at Fort Carson, Colorado, until his discharge from service January 17th.

She continued her teaching duties until stricken with polio on Friday, February 13th. She was rushed to the St. Francis hospital in Grand Island, where everything that doctors, nurses, relatives and friends could do through loving care and prayer, was of no avail and she passed into the hands of her loving heavenly Father, who knows best.

She was a faithful member of the Farnam Methodist church and was active with the Youth Fellowship group, the choir, and acted as pianist many times.

She graduated from the Farnam high school in 1949, and taught three successful terms of school in the Gothenburg and Farnam communities.

Beryl had such a cheerful disposition that all who knew her, loved her, and are glad even for the few years she brightened our lives. We cherish her memory now.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, John W. Banks; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Smith, and one sister, Mrs. Ardyce Bick, all of Farnam; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Fitch of Gothenburg; one niece, Marianne Kay Bick, and many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services, which were largely attended, were held Saturday afternoon, February 28, at two o'clock at the Farnam Methodist church, Rev. B. H. Hart, the church pastor, Rev. Otto Quaife, pastor of the Friend and Dorchester Methodist churches, and Rev. W. R. McCroskey, pastor of the Farnam Nazarene church, officiated. Mrs. Jay Rice, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sukraw sang "Nearer My God to Thee," "In the Garden," and "God Be With You 'Til We Meet Again," Mrs. Earl Edson accompanying them at the piano. The casket bearers were: Raymond Tillotson, Richard Edson, Clifford Hess, Leon Kotschwar, Dale McNickle and Lester Gaibler. Interment in the Farnam cemetery. The Olesens in charge of arrangements.
