Obituary Collection
James H. Nickerson

James H. Nickerson was born in Ohio in May, 1856, and died October 6, 1901. The deceased came to this state from Ohio when a young man taking land in Horrell precinct where he resided at the time of his death. He leaves a wife and six children, five boys and a girl to mourn his death. The oldest is a boy not quite 13 and the youngest is a little girl of 3. He has been engaged in teaching and farming, having been principal of the schools of Orleans, Curtis, Eustis and Maywood besides schools near home. He served one term as county Superintendent of Frontier county.

Fifteen years ago we became personally acquainted with Mr. Nickerson while attending institute at Curtis and we have always admired the man. Jim Nickerson was a man in the highest sense of the word, honest, industrious, with high ideals. There was not a shadow of pretense in his make up. He lived a moral virtuous life. His was not a life of profession but one of worthy action. It is said of him, that during the agitation of a license question in some town that he said that he would never teach and receive blood money as pay. He was generous to a fault always willing to divide with those in need.

Owing to the recent crop failure he leaves his property somewhat incumbered. He carried no life insurance. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge.

The funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday at eleven o’clock and were conducted by Rev. A. J. Clifton. The body was interred in the cemetery at Farnam. Many friends were present to attend the last sad rites at the grave of a man who will long be remembered by the people of this county.
