Death Calls Mrs.
J. L. Buterbaugh, In
Ninety-First Year

“Grandma” Was A Settler Here
Before First Dwelling Was Built
In Gothenburg

Mrs. Mariah Elizabeth Buterbaugh, one of the oldest residents of Dawson county, passed away at her home in Gothenburg on Monday, April 18, 1938. She would have reached her 91st birthday anniversary on August 29th.

Born in Snicksburg, Pa., in 1847, she was united in marriage on Sept. 3, 1863, to Joseph L. Buterbaugh, a young veteran of the Civil War, the ceremony taking place at Gettysburg, Pa. To the union were born ten children, eight of whom survive her, Mr. Buterbaugh having passed away on Nov. 14, 1930. To match her 91 years, she had 91 descendants.

In 1882 the family moved to Dawson county, six months before the first dwelling house was built in Gothenburg, and homesteaded southeast of town near White Rabbit postoffice. In 1904 they retired from farm life and had since made their home in Gothenburg.

Mrs. Buterbaugh was loved by all who knew her, and her presence will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon (Today) from the First Baptist church at 2:30 p.m.
